Don't Buy Fertiliser on Promises
Farmers confronted by a fertiliser salesperson should ask one simple question before any meaningful discussion, ‘does it have the Fertmark tick.' If it doesn't there's no guarantee of either quality or performance.
Farmers can easily see those fertilisers carrying the tick as they are displayed on the Fertiliser Quality Council website, [link]. Fertilisers showing the tick are independently audited on a regular basis and the nutrients declared in the promotion are guaranteed in the product.
Further all Fertmark member companies' field staff are qualified with the Massey University Fertiliser Certificate. This means they can give qualified advice on nutrient management and are able to properly use the ‘Overseer' nutrient management plan.
To be told a fertiliser can do something is not enough in today's harsh farming climate. An independent audit is required and Fertmark does this. Any company confident of its product is welcome to apply for Fertmark certification. If a company doesn't farmers would want to ask serious questions.

At last, an all-encompassing fertiliser website
The Fertiliser Quality Council (FQC) has recently updated its website and has just incorporated the Groundspreaders as an integral part of the FQC site.
Executive Director, Kevin Geddes, said that the site now contained everything a farmer needed to know about fertiliser and its application.
"Just by clicking on buttons farmers can find a list of ethical Fertmark tested fertilisers, the nearest store to provide the product and a list of Spreadmark accredited ground and aerial spreaders," Kevin Geddes said. "The entire process can now be completed in just minutes.
"In addition farmers can download DVD presentations such as ‘Four Steps to Sustainable Farming,' and also presentations from the 2009 Massey Fertiliser and Lime Research Centre conference.
"There is also a news section where farmers can get up to the minute information and they can also link to the fertiliser companies, Federated Farmers, Fertresearch, the Fertiliser and Lime Research Centre and the Ballance Farm Environment Trust.
"We have tried for a long time to get an all embracing site where farmers can get all the information they need on fertiliser and its application. We believe we have now achieved just that," he said

Auditor - Fertmark Spreadmark Audit Services
The Fertiliser Quality Council seeks expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons to provide an audit service for the Fertmark and Spreadmark Quality Assurance schemes. Fertmark provides an independent audit of the nutrient levels of fertilisers and Spreadmark provides quality assurance of the placement of fertiliser on farm land.
Information about the Fertiliser Quality Council may be found here on FQC website.
Expressions of interest must be registered by 1 May 2009 with Kevin Geddes, Executive Director, Fertiliser Quality Council, PO Box 414, Ashburton. kgeddes@fedfarm.org.nz
